Fleas

Identification

Fleas are very small insects which are parasites upon many animals including dogs, cats and occasionally man. Our most common fleas are cat and dog fleas. They are approximately 1/16 of an inch, wingless, brown to brownish-black with piercing and sucking mouth parts. Their bodies are laterally flattened to allow them to move rapidly through hair. Their legs are designed for jumping.

Life Cycle & Habits

Fleas have a complete life cycle, egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female flea will lay her eggs on the host and they will fall off. Usually they fall off where the host sleeps and scratches. The larva stage is very small and caterpillar-like in appearance. One very rarely sees them. The flea larva eat organic debris, dried blood, dandruff, etc. The pupa stage is camouflaged with dirt or grains of sand which adheres to its surface. They will eventually hatch into the adult flea.
